DISTANCE
8 miles (Walked)
TOTAL SO FAR: 43.85 miles
An easy, flat section of the route with no real need for maps as it was almost entirely along the Montgomery Canal tow path. Quite a speedy walk too with the bonus of a really good pub (Nag's Head, Garthmyl) at the end. Aiming to pay a return visit to the Nag's Head on the next leg. The canal along the stretch walked so far is not navigable and in places, drained. Ruined and abandoned buildings make for a distinctive atmosphere along the route. Most difficult of all were the bouncers, in the form of swans, who may or may not let you pass along the tow path.

ROUTE MAP STAGE 5
Very clear-cut route with good way markers, although, knowing that you follow the tow path for most of the journey, they were broadly redundant. However, where the canal disappears and you have to dross a road, the way posts do come into their own.
Plenty of River Severn views as well as the canal: first time we felt like we were trailing the river.
