the severn way

Stage seven: Pool Quay to Melverley

DATE: 19th June 2024

DISTANCE

9.2 miles (Walked)

TOTAL SO FAR: 62.65 miles

Five years since our last "leg" of the Severn Way.  Quite a few potential start dates but 2024 floods, prior engagements and generally feeling 6 years older added to the postponements.  An added element of challenge was the lack of "facilities" at either end of the walk: so visits to garden centres and MacDonalds were also planned in.  A clear walk on paper, but poor signage and cattle added several frissons of excitement to the day.  Having said that, we did get to amble along Offa's Dyke at times.

ROUTE MAP STAGE 7

Low level route but with very poor signage and access; what there was, was hidden and in poor repair with some being non existent.

The river was visible for the most part and starting to become  significantly wider and deeper.  The raised dyke walking was good although very overgrown in places.  The biggest issue was the presence of cattle with either a very curious or militant disposition.  We had to re-route on a few occasions.  The backdrop of Breidden Hill with quarry and Rodney's Pillar was very dramatic.
